A post earlier by mklotz reminded me of a old tool a good friend had given me several years ago. It was his dad's. It's a "Hjorth Perfection Spring Winder" I've never used it and I don't think anyone else either, it looks unused. Has any of you used or seen one before" I will attempt to post photos in the photo bucket

Neat. No, never used one. The name Hjorth is Swedish. Might now go by the name of Erlandsson-Hjorth, a machine dealer.

I have one of the small ones, and use it frequently. The first page explains its use.

I use it on the lathe at low back gear speed. The spacing washer spaces the coils without the need of using the threading feed to space coils. The only tricky part is adjusting tension, which affects the final diameter of the spring.

It was made by The Hjorth Lathe & Tool Co, Boston. Pat July 30, 07.

a couple of questions I need to ask about the spring winder. 1. what kind of wire is used to make springs? and 2. where do you get the wire?

I use pino wire,(springwire) available from MSC and others. It comes in different dia. and different materials.
