I'm looking for an unusual truss head screw (see picture). It's a slotted 10-32 x 5/16", chrome plated, with an extra wide head. The head is about 9/16" wide, which is about 1/8" wider than a normal truss head screw. I don't care so much about the length (I can cut a longer one), or even the plating (I can get that done if I must), but I can't find screws with the extra-wide head anywhere.

Anybody have any idea where I might be able to find some of these, or if there's a special name for this type of head? I'd also appreciate the names of good fastener houses and screw machie companies.

Thanks.

Have you tried McMaster-Carr? www.mcmaster.com (http://www.mcmaster.com)

If they don't have it, they might be able to get it for you. They offer a find-it service. The two times I've inquired about something weird they've come up short, but it's worth a try.

Or, Small Parts www.smallparts.com (http://www.smallparts.com) might conceivably have something like that.

Or make yer own! http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//biggrin.gif

This kind of screw, with many variations in head style but all with 10-32 threads and larger than normal heads, is used to mount electronic equipment in standard equipment racks.

One possible source would be the rack manufacturers: Bud, Stancor, many others. Do a net search for "equipment rack". Each will have a slightly different style of screw they sell. Of course, they have to buy them from screw companies but they can get anything they want when purchasing in bulk, like hundreds of thousands or more. This is likely not a stock screw at the screw companies.

If you only need a few, I may have what you want for postage.

Nice pix.

I looked and found five that are a pretty close match to yours, except they are not chrome. About 1/2" length. They are yours if you want them.

I have more of others that differ in several ways: phillips, more decorative head, etc.

Guys, Thanks for the replies.

Spin Doctor - Did either of those searches return results for you? I tried them both and came up empty each time.

Paul - I tried looking for rack screws, but I never had any luck finding a similar head. I will certainly accept your offer. I'll email you directly to iron out the details.

Uhmmm: Title suckered me in.

Yeah, I used to.. Now I got married to a " much younger woman" I have not been out looking for "one of them since then"

She endeared herself to me when I was sucking real lemon out of a dish sponge and hitting the moonshine w/salt. Carrol showed up with a bag of lemons. WHOO HOO....
