I have it in my head that I want to build a little parade car similar to the one here...

What I need help with is the rear axle. I would prefer to run a live axle in pillow block bearings. This would allow me to mount a sprocket and disc brake set-up on the axle. All of the bicycle wheels I have ever seen have bearings in the hub for a dead axle. How can I afix the wheels to the axle to run the live axle? I was thinking about maybe welding the bearing to the hub in the wheel, and make some sort of adapter hub for a solid wheel/axle mount. I am leary of applying too much heat to the wheel hub. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

Arbo,

If you want to drive both back wheels AND go around corners, then a differential would be handy. Surplus Center have them at around $35, and you get what looks to be about the right amount of axle. See http://www.surpluscenter.com/sort.asp?UID=2005022408094040&catname=powerTrans&keyword=PTT1

The axles have circlip grooves for keeping them in place in the pillow blocks. To drive the wheels, maybe you could make rings that have the same OD as the original bearings, Loctite them in and then clamp them between a collar on the axle and a plate on the end with a screw into the end of the axle.

Ian

Arbo,
See the smallcars.com website. The 24th edition of the news letter talks about the Worksman co. who make industrial bicycles and tricycles. They have heavier 26" wheels with keyed hubs for live axles.
Hope this helps

Arbo,

let me know how you make out with your project, as i have been thinking about a similar one! everytime i see one of the original Fords or Packards i think it would be cool to build something similar. i have several engines i could use and enjoy working with both wood and metal.

If you build one make sure you paint the wheels black.

I would look at a differential from a riding lawn mower. Cheap from a salvage yard. As far as locking the wheels to the axle you could key them or just drill a hole through the hub and axle and put in a shear pin. I would probably use a bit stronger wheel from a light motorcycle rather than bicycle wheels. The hub would be stronger and it would also have good brakes.

TOPCT, that is a COOL idea. Turning a Honda 50 into an early year motorcycle lookalike! So simple! I gotta go find an old Honda!

Check out this one that was on auction.. Pretty neat, looks like fancy bicycle wheels.

I've seen those little model T's. Pretty cute alright. That siren would be a definate laugh and a half.

I'm really lucky. I live three blocks away from the biggest bike wrecking yard in town and two blocks away from a huge fenced lot of wrecked riding lawnmowers. Lots of goofy ideas floating around for sure.

Lets see what's in a siren....not much. http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//biggrin.gif

two slutions come to mind. One, you are using motorcycle rear wheels arnt you? If so they have drive sprockets on the hub. Fit a countershaft and short chains to the wheels. Two; make a flange adaptor to fit the axle dia and the sprocket bolt pattern. An easy way to make it turn better is to just hook up the drive to one wheel only. Doug

Parade car?

I thought you meant one of those Packard open cars which came with a special low 1st gear - a real Parade car for welcoming home the hero, monarch etc http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//smile.gif
