OK, I'm new at this. Waiting to receive my machine. Any opinions about where to start and about the machine will be greatly appreciated

Take the whole thing apart and clean it very carefully. Replace the gear box oil with clean stuff. I used a snithy for 4 years and did great things with it. I cut my machinists teeth and became pretty damn good. It will take some patience, and you need to always spend about 20 min. adjusting out backlash and cleaning before you begin.

Mount it on a very solid base or stand. A 2x4 frame reinforced with plywood is great. Buy extra shim stock washers from your dealer to have on hand when you need them. Even though I now use a south bend lathe and a big mill, the smithy has come ot work where we use it from time to time. Enjoy!
