I have an old Seneca Falls Star lathe, someone has riged the pulleys and motor behind it and it takes up at least 4 feet by 6 feet, just the motor and pulleys! Is there any good pics of motor mounting situations out on the net? Has anyone tried to put a treadmill motor on something this old? This seems to be a nice old lathe, I dont want to scrap it, but I dont have that kind of room! Thanks for any help Dave

You might look into a VFD. By combining the motor & variable speed controller you can eliminate some belts & pulleys & intermediate shafts. Try searching this site as there are lots of posts on VFD's. My local supplier has a new surplus 3HP unit for $250, but others on this site have bought them for much less.
