What kind of chuck a 3 or 4 jaw, selfcentering or what? something that is easy to use that will not break the bank. Any help I can get will be thankful. Dan

Welcome, Dan!

You need both IMO, but if you can afford only one get the 4-jaw. Good articles in recent HSM about centering work in the 4-jaw.

Bison (Polish made) has some of the nicest imported chucks: http://www.toolmex.com/tmx/Tools/tools.asp

This company has both new & used: http://www.smalltools.com/type.asp?reccnt=1&class=Chucks&category=3+Jaw+Manual

Tooling up a lathe is not a cheap undertaking, be prepared to spend. I picked up a $100.00 lathe once, then dropped $130.00 on a 3 jaw chuck for it!

I'm guessing the lathe didn't come with a chuck & you're asking what type of chuck to buy. If you're just intending on turning round or hex stock, look for a 3 jaw. If you want to handle anything that comes down the pike, a 4 jaw independant will fit the bill. With the 4 jaw you'll wan't an indicator to center or locate your workpiece. Both chucks would be best and a set of collets would round off your tooling nicely. As to what brand to buy, that can become sticky. There are some low priced chinese chucks out there, some swear buy them, others swear at them. Bison brand, made in Poland, is a good brand, but not cheap. The used route can be chancy, lots of good ones out there and lots of junk too. Ebay can be a good source, just don't go crazy with the bidding.
Have fun,

Whoops, looks like Barry already feed you the poop. Hope you don't mind hearing it twice!
