    taps

I have small taps that I cannot identify for size. Can they be identified by measuring the number of threads with a thread pitch gage and measuring the OD with a mike.?

Be advised that tap major diameters are a trifle larger than the nominal size of the standard thread to achieve male crest/female root thread clearance. Also taps have circular relief so measure at the thread crest only. Smaller taps may have three flutes compounding the problem.
