I just got back fom doing some contract work aboard a U.S. Navy frigate and I wonder
what happened training and craftsmanship.
On jobs like these I usually only take tools I know that a ship doesn't have and rely on the ship to provide the proper equipment(ships are require to be able to perform certain level of repair jobs and maintain the equipment to do so, it's mandated by congress believe it or not).
Well anyway, I needed to use the lathe,
but couldn't, no face plate, center rest
or centers, no mics either just a digital caliper. I asked the 2nd class machinist where the stuff was " I don't know but do you want to see my new computer controlled laser engraver"? I'll take my "I surrender" sign in old english.
What a shame, the kid had absolutely no interest in his job and the lathe (a beautiful Modern Standard 15x30) was covered with junk. Things have certainly changed since I retired.
