i've got an old jacobs 1/2" drill chuck thats proven rock solid over the years.

i think it must have a chip stuck inside as its gotten increasing harder to open and close. in fact, now its impossible. http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//smile.gif

i imagine these things can be taken apart? where to start?

The outside shell presses off.

I think this is how to do it, but you ought to get confirmation on the details. Turn a hollow sleeve with an i.d. just barely larger than the i.d. of the outer shell. Retract the jaws all the way (if you can), put the sleeve on top of the outer shell, and press the shell down and off. Be sure the ball bearings (if any) don't go flying!

Note particularly that I was wrong when I said the jaws ought to be retracted all the way...apparently they shouldn't be....
