I have The dims. for the sheaves which is moot due to keyway broaches but I need the depth on the shaft. Is there any where on the web where there is a cheat sheet?

BTW I am doing a 3/8 key way in a 1 1/4" and a 1 1/2" shafts.

Keyway depth on the sheave and keyway depth on the shaft should both be half of total key thickness + .010".

The machinist handbook disagrees, sorry. Check the other posts.

IOWOLF, sounds like you already know the answer.

Machinery's deals with that little half moon shaped section that is milled off when making the keyway. It is added to the half thickness of the key.

All I do is crank the knee up until I see the endmill/milling cutter make a flat spot the full width of the cutter. Then I zero the knee and crank up 1/2 the thickness of the key.

Since I use the same method as John S. and others for finding center with the endmill anyway it's a snap.

If you end up with a shaft diameter/key size combination that's not in Machinery's it's pretty much the simplest way to find it.

Hi you can look to the following site they had a nice little program to calculate keyway

Luke , can you narrow it down a bit?

keyway squared divided by 4 times shaft size equals chord depth to within .001. (the crown on the shaft is the chord depth)
