    Acme thread leadscrew stock

Does anyone know where in Canada I can find a source for acme 1/2 X 10 tpi acme thread stock suitable for leadscrew use? I know of a couple of places in the US but they won't ship by USPS and if it ships by UPS the customs clearing fee is ridiculous.

Evan, you probably don't want to ship UPS anyway. Took me three tries to get some tool steel from Speedy Metals last month - I read here that it had been becoming a problem with UPS. They were beating the snot out of the packages, causing the steel to come out of the box. Seems nobody wondered about the very light "10 lbs" package.

Who knows, maybe the teamsters are having a "labor action" against UPS.

No luck with any of the listings I can find. It seems that no one in Canada stocks leadscrew quality material.

Thanks, but both of those suppliers are only offering fastener grade stock. It only meets ANSI/ASME B1.1 1982 standards which isn't good enough for a lead screw, especially the straightness.

Not a problem anyway, I found a supplier in the US that is willing to send via air mail parcel post which will cost US $18.95 instead of about $70 via UPS. They have left hand acme .5" x 10 tpi roll formed thread in bright finish 4140 for $8.48 per three foot length. Speced to no more than .009" total pitch deviation over three feet and 0.2" straightness over 12 feet. That should be good enough. Bronze round nuts to fit are a bit steep at $11.00 each.

And now we know why the Chinese are winning.
Lump of bronze, machined to decent specs, or so we are told, sold for less than one hours labour and still too dear ?
