View Full Version : Reparing carbide Dado blade

Got a call from a friend this morning. He was using his radial arm saw with the Dado blade when it hit a hidden finish nail. 4 of the carbides chipped. Has anyone tried to repair this? I'm comfortable with brazing and precision grinding small carbide bits.

This was a brand new blade and it was over $120 so he's desperately hoping that it can be repaired.

BTW, I may have mentioned this before but this board must have in total over a thousand man years of experience, and to tap into that makes me feel very previleged.

A good saw shop can replace the carbide. Mine counts the bad teeth and the wear left in the blade to determine if worth doing.

I had blades damaged and repaired send it like stepside to a proper saw shop specialist its not as expensive as you think.

Tell you freind to go to lee Valley and buy the $30 metal detector and check every board - it only takes a second and will pay for itself in no time.

Most descent blade makes will repair their blade cheap - Forrester is the best blade for the buck. Take it back and claim it came that way - that might work in some places.

On the topic of returning things to the store, I was standing in line trying to return some stuff that I had bought at Home Depot, and the guy front of me had a miter saw which was all covered in dust and it looked as if it's been left in the rain for few days. Anyways, when the lady behind the counter asked whether there was something wrong, he simply answered "No, I just don't need it anymore". The lady smiled and gave him his money back. Heck, he could have been completely honest and said, "No, I've finished building the deck so I don't need it anymore". I think they would have still given him the money back. It's amazing how unscrupulous some people can be.

I was only joking. We have a Lee Valley Tools Store a mile or so from where I live. Wehn I go in I always go to the "returns" shelf to see what the shallow end of the gene pool has been up to. I bought a Sorby Framing chisel form them that the cutting edge obviously had a run-in with a nail and was left to rust - in addition the Ash handle has snapped in half. How the wanker did that I have no idea - I tried am ash dowel smaller than the handles neck and could not break it until I but it in a vise and used a sledge. I bought it, cleaned it up, bought a sorby handle for it and installed it - new chisel (sorta) razor sharp, 1/2 price.

LVT has the most liberal return policy I have ever seen - but they rarely get returns in Edmonton or Calgary - mostly Ontario. They had one Nuclear scientist bring back a mangled router bit (it is written up in their shop notes series) - the dork used the bit without removing the hot dip the bit is dunked in to protect the edges. Leonard Lee told me that the guy phoned and pleaded for him to retract the notes as his co-workers at the Reactor were bugging him about it (him being a rocket scientist and all) - so in a later catalog he printed a retraction stating it was the Sears router that was at fault. Nice guy - I would have told the guy - look, apprentices all over the world learn the hard way (what not to do) so should you. http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//biggrin.gif

Just re read your opening line on this topic and first time round I must've missed the BTW remark.

Can I claim the man years knowledge bit from 1002AD - through to 1052AD???

Talking of shop returns, many years ago the good lady once (do I wish it was once as well!) bought a dress for a special evening out. Come the evening and she puts the dress on only to find a red wine stain, and slightly discolouration in the armpit area. Shrieks of sobbing and tears later (no need for the Halabeno sauce here!), she finds something 'that will do'. The following day she takes the dress back to the shop to complain ~ looks like someone had had the dress previous, worn it, then returned the thing.

At least women don't wear dado saws.....

Yes, we should all just say - sorry, there is more of us than you. Get your taxes from the Royal Bank for once instead of us! I never made a billion profit (not including credit cards - they never mention those...) and I paid more taxes than they did! (me - lots, them - zilch)
