Given the distance from the wrist pin to the skirt it looks like it would be a very short stroke engine - I'd guess it's for a steam engine.

Most steam engines are double acting though.
Perhaps a marine diesel engine. Maybe it isn't even a piston.

You should see the compressors at West Coast natural gas compressor station number five just north of here. The pistons are the size of garbage cans. It makes that one look like a model airplane engine. The compressors are 12 cylinder. 8 cylinders run on natural gas and the other four compress the gas for re-injection to the pipeline. The really scary thing is seeing the gas come out of the compressor through a 12" pipe that is glowing red hot before it goes to the massive radiators that cool it before it goes back into the pipe. I always worried when I smelled gas at the plant.
