Okay with all the talk about a seperate forum for random stupidity how about this idea.

What if we had a Friday night open thread?I have seen it elsewhere and it seems to work good at letting people post all the off the wall crap they want, how does that sound?

Sure...I just posted this in another thread though and it pretty much sums up my opinion:

I thought that the "Third Hand" was our completely on topic machinery and related tech only section...I don't go there much though because I like the mix of on and off topic.

Since the really weird OT stuff comes from about 5 people (OK maybe now only 4 people), it seems that a separate forum is not required.

An OT thread, well, I bet it would have offshoots, and side threads, and related threads.......... That's pretty much a "thank you for your input" thread, to be ignored, and no-way would satisfy folks who want to get their words out in fromnt of us.

NAWWWWWW....
I'd rather see the really OT stuff just get deleted as soon as it starts to get out of hand.

Yeah a few people will complain about censorship etc, but mostly that has historically been the folks who START contentious threads. At the risk of being mean, let them talk to someone who cares.....

I think Don does a good job with the PM board... there have been open threads, as long as they don't get too stupid... like the (*&%&^^% dowsing thread which must be up to 50 pages by now. I have no idea, haven't read it for weeks......

One good rule would be that an OT thread must be so marked in title. Then monitoring is limited to looking for OT, and killing ones that have gone rogue.

Seems pretty simple, I monitor a very active BB for my employers... its easy to scan...and I'm not moderating, but actually giving answers. Just dumping bad threads shouldn't take long at all.

Rush: Welcome To Open Line Friday, Heres Our first caller, Bill from Connecticut.

BillH: Hey Rush, I been waiting forever to talk to you, this is a real pleasure.

Rush: Whats on your mind Bill?

BillH: I want to talk about SamGate. It is clear something is fishy, how could some one chase after their cat, warn a speeding van to stop, then whip out a cell phone, find the take photo button and take a picture with good enough resolution of the license plate of the Van as it is speeding away, all while being traumatized about your poor cat getting running over...

Rush: Lets not forget about court in 6:30 in the morning...

C'mon guys:
Lets try to use this board for what it is set up for. This is the HSM board. I do not have a problem w/some OT. And we have lots of related interests in the home shop besides just making chips . We all can use help with shop topics.
?? Why is it that some of the OT threads get sooo much attention? Sam the cat and creation vs evolution get more attention than the new guy that has a real shop question !! isn't that what we are realy hear for , to help the brother (or sister) Home shop machinist? If you want to talk about religion go to www.godsaidmansaid.com (http://www.godsaidmansaid.com) or other similar site. I will gladly share my christian beliefs with any one that asks, and I have had very interesting and lengthy conversation with the late Rudy Kouhoupt on this subject. But this is not the place for it.
1) post OT subjects as OT in the general section.
2) Use networking and Third Hand more.
3) Follow the rules of the board.
4) Neil has better things to do like put a magazine together for our benifit. do we realy want him spending his valuable time babysitting the users of this board.
My Humble opinion
Jim

Weird, If this happens, I'd like to start it off.

Subject: Desperately seeking hot chicks on Harleys.

Message: Someone had a post of these chicks evidentally from H(.)(.)tersville. The one mounted on the Harley is my kind of broad. Anyone out there got her name? I'd be interested to meet her for a riding companion. And, most importantly, is that her bike?

She appears to be single.

(As an asside from the post: can you imagine what a blast these folks would be to hang with?)
