This picture was taken at the House on the Rock in Spring Green, Wisconsin. The museum has one very large room devoted to antique steam apparatus, generators, etc.

I was sickened to see the horrible mutilation done to everything in the room. http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//eek.gif Apparently to make everything shine they let someone loose with a grinder. The majority of the displays were of brass and copper, all disfigured the same way, ground where-ever the grinder would fit into. I just had to get out of the room. It was OK when I was there eight years previous.

Looks more like the work of a disgruntled employee then a curator or a conservationist... at least I'd hope that was the case. You should of contacted the director of the museum and asked what was up. Shame either way.

A good welder shouldn't need a grinder.

If any of that piping is in service under any kind of pressure, a serious safety problem could exist.

Geez Louise! I had to look twice - I thought it was a fancy effect of digital picture editing. It would have looked better if the nimrod had used a ballpeen hammer. What could someone have been thinking?
Seriously - maybe it's vandalism, as suggested by Tinkerer. I can't believe someone would do that on purpose and think it was an improvement.

Well theres a good source of material for the crucibel. We can make up some brass cannons and bells. It really is an abomination.
Did you get your entry money back.

For real, this is in a museum, on display? Who in the hell would be proud of doing work like that for all to see? A museum finds this fit for a display of antique steam apparatus? That's bullsh*t!!

IF it is SUPPOSED to look like sh*t, then it looks great. I don't think I could make anything look like that on purpose. IMO appearance counts in machine, or any other line of work.

At work, I build laboratory apparatus. Give someone two custom built apparatus, one that looks like someone cared about what they were doing, and one that looks like it was built by a hack.

Though they may both work exactly the same, what would YOUR immediate impression of which one will work better?

I despise finished work that looks like sh*t!

Apparently, some people just don't care what their work looks like, though I don't know how they couldn't.

Of course this was taken at the House On the Rock which is full of oddities. It may very well have been their intent given the 'displays' in the rest of the place.

Very true. Not only that, people who work with the apparatus you build will generally treat it with more respect if it looks well finished.
