    suds pump

why is it not a good idea to run a suds pump empty? I keep getting told not to run all types of pumps empty as it is likely to result in damage. I can see with some pumps that they would need to be bled afterwrds but damage gets me confused why ?Alistair

some pumps rely on the coolent to keep there motors cool.
and some have close fitting revolving parts in the pump itself.....which if allowed to run dry would seize up.
    all the best..mark

What mark said.. Also some might over-rev and burn out without a load.. Some soft rubber paddle wheel pumps might rely on the liquid for lubrication, etc.

What is a "suds pump"? In these parts, the term "suds" refers to beer. They don't use a pump around here. They rely on the CO2 pressure of a tank.

I can't imagine ruining a good beer by stirring it up with a pump.

Why do I keep getting this image of Alistair falling asleep with a tube in his mouth while the "suds pump" runs dry?

Could it be once you use them and then if let to run dry and sit in the dry condition the seals will harden or deteriorate.

Most pumps rely on the fluid being punped to lubricate the packing or shaft seal.

If alowed to run dry, it will damage the seal. Packing is more forgiving, a mechanical seal can be damaged in a few seconds if allowed to run dry.

I've got a suds pump- it's between my lips and my stomach. Cheers!
