I am thinking about buying a Jet GH-1340W or GH-1440W lathe before the end of the year. Does anyone have any feedback about these lathes?

Has anybody here used one? Did you like it or hate it?

I have a GH jet 13X40 that I purchased in 1982 or so. It has been a good machine and will do it's part if I do mine. My shop is just a home shop and I don't know how this machine would stand up in a comerical shop.

The one big complaint that I have with this machine is that the lowest speed is 90rpm. for me that is too fast for threading to a shoulder as in threading a gun barrel and ect.

In the beginning I had trouble with the electric motor. Part of the trouble was the motor it self and the other part was my electric service. Jet sold me a replacement motor of 3HP, as was on the lathe, for $90.00. After replacing the motor I have had no other problems with the machine.

Now I have a DRO on the lathe and that has been the greatest thing since bubble gum.

Hope this helped

Thanks for the info Charlie. This particular Jet lathe that I am looking at is an updated design that came out a couple of years ago.

It has a different gear box with 12 speeds from 40 to 1800 rpm. I was planning on getting the 3 phase model so that I can use a VFD to slow it down even more.

I had aGH 1340 in my shop and was never dissappointed in its performance. The thing ran like a champ and held size very well.We were taking 1/4 inch cuts in 4140 and it never hesitated.

One thing I forgot to mention you might want to find out where the lathes are made at now.
Mine was made in Tiwan and if possible compare and older one and the one that you are considering.
