Anyone remember the free piston jet engine from Mechanix Illustrated 1969 called the Loudmouth? There is a guy selling the plans on E-Bay. Looks like a fun project. IIRC it powered a go cart to over 100 mph.

I can't find the posting, but I had run across a partially finished engine a few years ago. I eBayed it, as I didn't have the time or inclination to complete it.

The engine was originally designed to run on butane gas, but the high powered one running the go kart used acetylene.

It is a pretty complex engine, and could possibly work as claimed.

If anyone is interested, I have the plans from the original builder, and will send them for copying and postage costs.

I got the plans - thanks for that. I'm currently looking around the web to see if anyone has audio/video of it. They say it's loud - I wonder how it compares to a pulse jet.

I've been looking over the literature. It looks a little like an opposed 2 cylinder, 2 stroke motor with no crank. I'm sure there's a lot I haven't figured out yet, but if it runs upwards of 30K strokes/min, I'll bet it makes an impressive noise.

Anyway, whether I actually build it or not, it's worth the $5 in educational value. Thanks.

Here is a funny video of a Turbine powered gokart gone-bad http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//biggrin.gif

Holy s**t! What the hell was that? Where'd you find it? Is there more?

Could that possibly be an uncontained compressor failure? From the looks of the video, I'm guessing the cameraperson was beaned by something. I hope they were ok.

It's gotta really hurt to have a project like that do something like that. I've seen some video of thrust-based turbine gokarts, and one or two for turboshaft-based ones. From the looks of the videos I've seen, the turboshaft karts have absolutely no problem with acceleration.

Thanks for the vid, Adrian.

On another note, I did some searching for any more real info on running loudmouth engines. Seems there's only one! When I googled for it, I came up with a lot of hits with the same phrase - "This is our discussion board based on LoudMouth engine" It looks like someone long ago posted info, but now the phrase is mirrored on every virus-infested, popup-throwing, porn posting, warez seeking website on the planet. Sigh.

How about anyone else here? Aside from the original builders, has anyone heard of someone building and running one of these engines? Or even actually seen one? I've already seen the guy on eBay that sells the plans - he pops up pretty regularly. The claims for this one are a bit bold, and it would be interesting to hear more, if any of it is accurate.

Thanks, fellas.

I found it on one of my DV video tapes, but I don't know how it got on there... The real funny thing is, right after that video, there is someone lying on the ground that looks just like me with a turbine empeller sticking out of his head. http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//biggrin.gif

Actually, I got it off the WEB somewhere.. I think if you search for "Turbine Gokart" you'll probably find it somewhere. I assume the turbine itself blew apart and went through the housing, but I'm not sure.. I do know that it's funny though http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//wink.gif
