How do you read a test dial indicator?

Thank you,

I'm not sure I understand the question.

In general, dial indicators measure distance from a reference point. You decide what that point is, and zero the indicator on the reference. Then you move the material or sample as appropriate and read the new value, which is the distance between the two points.

I think that this is a "spoof". The guy "just registered" and asks (what appears to be) a "dumb" question. (I might get some disagreement, but I believe that there "are" dumb questions, along with dumb answers.

If he can't read a "dial", maybe he shouldn't operate machinery either.

JMHO.......

Here is some basic information that may be of help;
http://www.mini-lathe.com/Measurement/Dial_indicators/Dial_indicators.htm

It might also be worthwhile to try to get a recent Starrett catalog. There is a lot of information in them on the use and application of measuring tools.
