I am toying with the idea of buying a Bison 5C collet chuck. They offer a chuck that requires an adapter(D1-4 in my case) to mount or a model that does not require an adapter for mounting. Are there any advantages to buying a plain back chuck and spending the extra $$$ for the adapter other than being able to change adapters for use on another lathe?

Hi Pat..
I have one of those. When I got my current lathe with the D1-4 spindle, I marked the spindle and each backing plate so that I put each on the same way every time. I then took a skim cut on each so that they ran perfectly true and will be that way each time they are mounted. I also cut the registers just a bit undersize so that I can move the chucks around on the backing plates making them run true. To sum all this up, using a separate backing plate allows you to adjust the chuck to run dead true.
