View Full Version : Hot! Live Center

My live center appears to be running hot or is it? Run at 1000 rpm for 3 or 4 minutes, no load or cutting, and is quiet warm. I would say by touch 120 to 150 deg? I cleaned the old grease and live center very thorough. Repacked with a good quality white lithium bearing grease, drop point 350 deg.Loosened the spanner nut and let it get warm hoping to expand the race out if it was too tight. didn't help. I am sure the bearings are packed well with grease. Is the temp normal, too much grease, any suugestions? Thanks.

How much pressure are you putting on it?

........Too much grease will make it run warm also.

Too much grease, most likely. You just need a light coating, not a solid mass.

To much preload on the bearing will also make it run hot.
If it were mine, I'd take it apart and re bearing it and put in fresh grease and set the preload correctly
But that's just me...
