vernon mill

Hey,
Can't get the pics posted due to lack of talent in that area. I wasted too much time trying. I have been offered a Vernon mill 220 volt complete set of Brown & sharpe collets for $850. Is this a good deal or should I walk? Machine appears in great shape! Includes a 360 degree vise, collet changing wrench and the collets. What do you think?? Thanks in advance for all advise. Fred

Vernon is kind of a strange machine, not quite a vertical mill, not quite a jig borer, but I always thought of it as a well-made machine. Very old, though - all Vernon verticals are at least half a century past their prime.

The last one I saw for sale failed to get its starting bid of $850.

Which Vernon are you refering to?
Actually, Vernon had a "jig borer", and later bought out the Horizontal Mill that "Diamond" had been making ( Also a Los Angelus company)
So Vernon had a Horizontal Mill and a Jig Borer. Then they later merged with Sheldon, who offered the Horizontal Mill, but I donot know what happened to the Jig Borer.
I owned 2 Diamonds at one time.. a very sturdy mill...superior to the imports IMHO.

The machine is the verticle mill and jig borer. I hope to post pictures later today if I can get it to work. I wish it had some power feeds but manual is better than nothing. What do you think of the price? Thanks Fred

Looks like a lovely little machine. One thing to check is that the table travel (12" x 6" according to lathes.co.uk) is going to be big enough for whatever you intend to machine on it.

Thats a really nice machine agreed.
I really like the Art-deco looks of it.
Looking at the build of it, it looks very similar to my shipman pillar drill.
my drill has no move-able x and y axis though.

Thanks to both Bikepete and aboard_epsilon for the computer help!! the computer is a Frustrating machine. I think I am going to take the mill. I only do small projects and I am really cramped for space. Thanks Fred

I had a Vernon horizontal with a vertical head. It was a very solid machine. I sold it for something like $1,200. I don't think you would go wrong buying the Vernon vertical for what they are asking.
