Hey all!
I can't remember this...if a cutter IS NOT marked as to which PA it is...do we assume it is 20 deg?
I was just going through some cutters I got off Fleabay a while ago and one is a 14 1/2 deg. It's marked on the side that you couldn't see in the picture. I forgot to ask..grrr!
Just wondering for future purchases.
(Ha...I scored three 14DP cutters today!)
Thanks!
Russ

Never had that problem before.I wouldn't assume that thou.it would be imbarassing to cut a gear and hand it to a customer only to hear"uhhhh...this thing don't mesh" http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//biggrin.gif

I don't think that's a valid assumption. I think the most you can assume is that it's probably not the P.A. you need at the time. http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//biggrin.gif

It is probably safer to assume an unmarked cutter is 14-1/2*, as many were made before 20* existed.

Thanks for the advice guys...LMAO! http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//biggrin.gif
JC...I think I had it backwards then. Like I said...I couldn't remember. I think Sir John may have told me that last year...for all the good it did....lol!
Thanks again!

If those were the cutters from Canada, they were "Bevel Involute" gear cutters for cutting bevel gears, not the same as normal 14-1/2° PA involute gears. The cutter's tooth profile is more straighter than the normal involute cutter. I was out bid on the 6-16 DP "bevel involute" 14-1/2° cutter.

Doug...that'd be the ones. I knew they where for bevel gears but didn't read up about the difference in the PA. JT's writeup about cutting bevel gears sparked my interest. I did see a few people bidding on the cutter you where after.
