View Full Version : Machine Shop Scenes in Old Movie

I watched the old James Cagney movie "White Heat" today. He played a gangster and at one point got sent to the big house. While he was there his job was to empty the chip bins in the prison machine shop. There were a couple of good scenes with some 1940s era machine tools including a radial drill, horizontal milling machine, shaper, and a 16" or 18" swing Monarch lathe. Another con tried to rub Cagney out by dropping a rather large electric motor on him from the shop's overhead crane, but a friend shoved him out of the way just in time. A good old movie worth watching.

Not to mention the scene in which he puts "air holes" in the trunk of car for the stooge he just put in there.

Of course, he used a .45 to do it.

I love older movies. This is now on my list.

And if you havent checked out out, find a movie called "The Train" with Burt Lancaster. Not a bad war movie with a little bit of locomotive shop shots.

"October Sky" has a few good scenes of a 1940's era machine shop AND some locomotive stuff.

"The Machinist" has a shop none of us would ever want to work in. Very creepy.
