Better, yes. I use rubberized canvas, as in conveyer belting. Run the rubber side down and you have lots of driving power. I have some 1" if you want some. It has to be laced or use "gripper" type fasteners. This results in a small click some times.
How about serpentine belts as used on cars? My understanding is that they are available in 1" steps. You have to pull the spindle and jack shaft, but you would have a quiet running machine.
"V"belt? There was an article on converting a SB lathe to "V" sometime back, or wait for my article on improving your 9" and 10" lathe coming out next year. John

I just got some belts from www.beltcorp.com.
They have endless woven belts in 1/2" length increments, and many widths. Their minimum order is two, but mine were only $15 each. They are extremely strong, thin , and flexible. You will have to remove the spindle to put them on. I put it on an old Rockford milling machine, and am pleased with it. Bobby
