My father's birthday is coming up and I want to make him an engineer's sledge hammer. What type of steel should I use that can be heat treated but not become too brittle?

A2 or S7. If you're doing your own HT, S7 is a little more forgiving.

The local Ames-True Temper hammer plant uses 1060 mostly and 1080 for govt contracts, I make my own hammers and some for sale, and I use rear mount cultivator beams or front mount JD cultivator beams.
