Material forTool Holders

I want to make some tool holders for a quick change tool post the ones with dovertail, and wandering what kind of material should I use,like hardened or not hardened capability, any suggetions or recommentions

Sure, preheat-treated 4140 (30-35 rc) and nitride it when you're done machining would be best.

If you're a hobby machinist, cold rolled soft, should last a lifetime but you could have them case hardened.

Our mentor, Rudy K. just discribed making some in HSM.

I have a QC toolpost photos I made for an old Unamat and one for a 13 x 40 lathe, that I'll try to get posted sonewhere.
It has no dovetails, or other fancy machining required.

It onlr requires a keyway, couple thru slots,
and v slots in the blocks.

There are instruction on there about building one. I may be just a weenie but biast as I wrote it but it does work and works well.
By the way BDMS is UK speak for Bright Drawn Mild Steel, what the US know as cold rolled.
