View Full Version : New Bulletin Board
Well, we're about to change the look of the bulletin board as part of our website rebuild project. The target date for this changeover is Thursday March 23rd. We hope all goes well, but there is the possibility of some minor interruptions of service.
The software for this new makeover promises quite a number of new features along with a more modern look. I'm certain there will be questions regarding the new features, some which I can answer and most likely some that will require further investigation.
Please bear with us as we embark on this latest improvement.

Progress may have been all right once,
but it has gone on too long. http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//biggrin.gif

Now I got to learn something else and I was just getting the hang of this one. http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//biggrin.gif

Betcha the dialup users won't like the "improvements". I've been on a number of "other" BBSs, most of which have features such as name of original poster, name of latest poster to a thread, etc, etc. All are much, much slower than this one.
I'll go along with that. There are several forums I used to frequent that I have given up on because the "enhancements" make them essentially unusable on dial-up. That's all I have at home and if that happens to this one I won't be here on the weekends.

I'll bet Murphy will be getting plenty of extra sleep between now and the 23rd http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//eek.gif http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//biggrin.gif

Have you tested this software update as to how it will affect users on slow dialups?
As an example, your new and improved front page is no improvement in my opinion. What used to be a fast and efficient load and click is now a wait forever to load page. I for one have to click on the stop buttom to stop the page load so I can finally click to the discussion groups. I have also mentioned this problem of loading and note that your support staff have not done anything about it.
If your changes make using a slow dialup impossible, I for one will be leaving this forum.

Nope. Nope. The old ways are the best ways.Yep. Yep. They are. Why we've been doing it this way for years. Yep. The old ways are the best ways. 'New' makes folks uncomfortable. Yep. Musn't get folks riled up.

Uh oh, I bet it has an ignore feature on it.

In response to Too_Many_Tools: Most modern forums and html/dhtml pages preload images and functions before they are actually called by the user. This is great on a fast connection since anything you click or see is all ready to go, but it can cause slowness to dialup users. You wait before you need everything instead of just waiting while the one thing wanted loads as in the old days. This won't be changing anytime soon, so hopefully the sites you visit will create a "lite" version for dialup users.

I haven't seen the front page for years. If it is slow loading, simply ignore it and bookmark the second page with the three forums on it. It loads right away.

New features and modern look means slower and harder to read. Change over means day of problems accessing the site.
Newer is NOT BETTER.

I just hope it still brings topics to the top of the list when somebody posts to them. Without that feature the topic gets lost real quick before the question gets answered and to find a recent topic by scrolling is tougher. If you haven't been able to access the BBS for a few days then you are lost forever.
Change without progress is not necesarily good, it is just change.

We both know that "lite" versions are never offered.
And I do know that there are a number of vendor sites that I have stopped using (and spending money on) because of their conversion to "improved formats". The ugly little truth on the Internet is that a significant number of users have no alternative other than dialup and companies who ignore this fact do so at their own economic risk.
While Home Shop Machinist can do whatever they want, it would seem to be counterproductive to offer a format that precludes a large number of users...seems like a great way to tick them off so they will go elsewhere...along with their magazine subscription money.
Considering that the "front page" issue is being ignored, it tells this user what level of responsiveness we have for accomondating legitiment user complaints.
I wish them the best of luck with the new upgrade.

Now that the baby is sleeping through the night, HSM upgrades the BBS. I just have rotten timing in everything http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//frown.gif
I'll just but internet speed upgrade on the round2it list, about page 110, got quite a backload this weekend http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//biggrin.gif
Today I will gladly share my experience and advice, for there no sweeter words than "I told you so."

I hope a dozen folks aren't quoting you come March 24th http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//biggrin.gif http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//biggrin.gif
When you go to bed tonight, say a little prayer for the archives strong health!
I've been told that the bbs files will be loaded to the new bbs program and retained in the old until its determined that the upgrade was successful. The caveat is there may be some posting contents, links, etc, that may not transfer. I hope that's the only problem!

Is the new forum going to have the "rate a member" feature??? http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//smile.gif Personally, I think the whole rate a member deal is one of the more juvenile things I've seen on message boards. However, with this group it might provide some good entertainment... http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//wink.gif
Would you be part of the cool kids group on HSM?

BTW, there is a front page to this site? Who knew?
Heck, I was here almost 6 months before I realized there was a magazine associated with the site (or vice versa). And that's only because I happened to read a thread where someone mentioned the magazine.
Many people get to these forums via the back-door. It might be a good idea to somehow indicate that the site is an offshoot of the magazine, maybe via a change to the logo at the top?

Just log in as sombody else and rate yourself to the bottom. Then you can only go up from there. http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//smile.gif
