Oh, nice piece of kit!

You're going to develop some mean arm muscles working that...

Love to see the pics of the real thing.

on the other side is a more conventional
belt drive.
I guess the handle was for inching -or to keep the appretices busy-"here boy , take the belt off and turn the machineover, you get a better finish, new fangleed belting is no good ..."

the thing with the 2 cones and gear on the floor i guess that is for mounting a gear blank or piece of pipe? Iwonder if it fits in the hole under the ram.

I have the vice ,but it has split, though im sure i could get it cast.

this is the arm that drives the ram , look at the shape of the forging.
was it really necesscary to make such a shapely thing that would never be seen?

well it does look kinda ****ty, but a good boil in tsp ,some electrolysis and she should start looking better.

the ram ways are not worn at all,my 2 other shapers have wear, this thing nothing in that dept.
so thats good , but i think I am going to be doing a lot of scraping.......

I am intrigued by the indexing mechanism- was this to turn round things ?

So i managed to pull some parts off the machine.

seems like it has about 1/4 inch of whale oil on it .

I must say that under all the grime the fit and finish of the machine is amazing, I even have some of the original scaping.

the ways on the cross slide though all right in the middle (under where the saddle sat )but are shagged by rust out at the ends , so I will have to contrive to some how machine them down a bit, and scrape it all.

Still have not figured out the indexing mechanism under the ram .

I guess if you had a short piece of bar you could put it between centers and plane it round , or if there where a way of counting turns you could put flutes in a bar.

In the original picture of the thing it shows what I believe to be the rest
of the mechanism on the ground , but no other change gears .

Actually have the vice as well ,but it is split ,but should imagine that a new piece could be cast up.

so I think things are better than bad.so far....
