Anyone have one, want to discuss uses/problems/parts? I have had one for several years, for the price they are available for and quality, they are hard to beat. Big drawback is shortage of tools and collets.

Steve I have a N0. 2 Van Norman universal mill Pat. date 1897 It's a flat belt drive with a10x40 table. I was lucky and got all the small tooling with it. But no dividing head or vise. It came with a slotting head, but no tool post or tool holders for it. I would like to know what these looked like. I have had no luck finding a manual. c-dub

I just posted a query in the Third Hand for documentation for the Van Norman No. 1/2 mill.
The threads of my drawbar and collets are pretty shot. So I've made a new drawbar and will be making some end mill holders. I believe the collets can be purchased from Hardringe for $50 ea. At least that's what I've heard.

Several people have found collets for the #12 Van Norman, which my 1940 factory catalog indicates also fit the # 1/2 machine, at both Sobels and Meridian. Cost ran about $15 used each, not a bad price. I had bought most of mine from Sobels about 10 years ago at that price. I also had to rebuild the drawbar end on mine, long story. I had some blank collets (unhardened) made by a friend, and am considering getting a new batch run. Interested? Email me at hsteven@cavtel.net
