I have a Grizzly Model H2983 6 Head Knurling Tool. The problem I am having is that head is large and is too far into the machine. If I maintain the level with the "box head" that the tool has, it would have the proper lay to it.
What I was thinging was that build a tool post that is up higher and has the knurling tool point down on an angle to work area.
Has any had this problem defore and if so, how did you resolve it?

Don't take this as gospel but I believe the central pivot of your knurling tool cluster should be on or close to the center line of your lathe.

Not sure I'm understanding the problem/question involved here, but if it's a matter of positioning the knurls I'll share a tip I found useful. Set up the knurls as close to center height as you can, then while applying very slight knurling pressure, feed a narrow strip of paper (about same width as the knurls) between the knurls and workpiece. Analyze the knurl pattern imprinted on the paper strip and adjust height accordingly. If too high or too low the pattern will reflect only (or predominantly) the diagonals in one direction or the other, corresponding to the knurl doing most of the work. When properly set, the pattern will be uniformly cross-hatched. I cut lengthwise strips from copier paper so I have plenty of time to release the strip. (Obviously.. DO NOT maintain a tight grip on the strip!)

From what I have been taught, everything to do with the lathe is on center or slightly above. Given the fact that there is a lot of pressure on the crossfeed screw. once you have center I have angled the knurling tool to compinsate for the pressure to knurl. from what I have tried no mattter how tight the machine "from what we are dealing with" It will give a little.

Hi Jerry,
Throw that head in the trash can where it belongs. Spend a hundred bucks or so and get a scissor type knurl tool. Single pass knurling, perfect almost every time.
Those pressure type knurls are not good on any machines except very large lathes that can stand the force required on the crossfeed.
I agree. For $28.00 on sale, Enco sells a cheap scissor knurling tool. All my knurling annoyances magically disappeared. The part doesn't even have to be straight!
