All, I was wondering how many members if any are using 1950 to 1960 vintage monarch lodge & Shipley ect. lathes in their home shops. not atlas, craftsman, southbend bench lathes ect.
the bigger stuff.
thanks

I have a 12"x60" Lodge and Shipley. It is built like a brick @#$%house. It is in pretty fair condition except I need to take the bull gear off and replace several missing teeth. While on the subject, does anyone know any details of taking the spindle apart on this machine. There is a clutch in the cone pully. When I get the time I will be learning how I guess. From the looks, as you would expect, everything has to come off the spindle to get to the bull gear.

And I have a 10 Logan change gear lathe, nothing fancy.

Monarch has purchased the parts rights to L&S they might have information/parts their # is 937-492-4111
do you have any digital pictures of it and how fast will the spindle turn....

I have an old 13" LeBlond Regal toolroom lathe. Roundhead model. Also pretty sturdy. Love it, but w/only 500 max rpm, sometimes wish for more speed. (Tho 25 min rpm is nice at times).

Say, please pardon my ignorance. But what is the "Bull Gear"? I've never been sure what that refers to ...and too embarassed to ask (til now). I've had the top cover off mine a couple of times, but didn't think to notice and pick out what would likely be the bull gear.

The Bull Gear is the large gear on the spindle of a back geared belt driven lathe.

Yes, I have been in touch with Monarch. Bought a operators manual for this lathe, which turned out to be a general manual, mostly covering a geared head lathe. It did have a parts breakdown for my conepully model, but Monarch "doesn't have the drawing for this part anymore". The lathe is about a 1930 model I think. Have been in touch with Harold Baker too, bought a few of his publications that mentioned Lodge and Shipley, again, close but no banana. Best I got was a picture of the cone pully model, but no parts breakdown. Maybe it will be easy to get it apart. Was just hoping to findout something before I get to doing it, which won't be before winter at the soonest.
Thanks for all the replies.

I don't have any pictures of the lathe. As for speed, I have not belted it up to run very fast as my backgears are not useable yet. After I fix them I may change the speed upward somewhat. I have a catalog of L&S lathes from the period and the top speed isn't as great as you would expect. The catalog doesn't list 12" lathes, but starts at 14". The top speed for a 14" is 334 and the slowest backgear is 16 1/2. And the backgeared lathes from thes period had two backgear speeds. The 16" is listed as 14.5 to 400 rpm. Oh, that was for a geared head lathe, the cone pully model is 12 1/2 to 354. And so it goes up to some quite large lathes. The speeds don't seem to change much. I may belt mine up to 400 when I fix the backgears, in the meantime it runs about 250 top speed I think. There is a 4 speed gear box mounted over it with a truple V belt drive to the middle step of the cone pully on the spindle. This step has had a V belt pully fitted to it. Maybe the crown was machined off and the center machined out of a pully to fit on this step, that is what it looks like. It works good. Wish I had time to get it fixed up better. I have had all the gears out and cleaned and lubed them. Other than fix the back gears, I would like to take the carriage apart and clean it. I have been using the lathe though as is.
