I orderd a new lathe chuck from enco and the catalog said it has hardened reversable jaws. But when I ordered it the lady on the phone said that it has american standard jaws instead. Please enlighten me on what the difference is.

American Standard Pattern jaws are reversable...or not depending on if they are standard (inside-outside), soft jaws (Machinable), or pot chuck jaws (also machinable to hold the work).
Don't worry - they will be reversable. http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//smile.gif

Thanks Thrud you were right I got it today and it's just like the catalog showed. Except that the jaws are not hard. Even came with a chuck key which I was not sure if I would get one or not.

I have never seen a new chuck not come with a wrench or two. The Bison's are great chucks, but the allen wrench and screws they supply are not good.
If you order new Hard "Top Jaws" measure yours and compare to insure they will work. If they are indeed done to the American Standard Pattern they will be ground and a tight fit in your "Master Jaws" - the "Master Jaws" are connected to the scroll or adjusting screw for independent chucks.
Have fun with your new chuck! They are soooo shiney! http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//biggrin.gif
