View Full Version : How to post pictures on this forum using photobucket

First go to photobucket.com and create an account. They will email you a confirmation link. Visit that link to activate your account.

You will need to scan prints or load your digital images to your computer. They should be resized to about 800 pixels wide or less and saved as jpg files. When you save as a jpg file you usually have the option to save at different quality levels. Avoid using high quality level as the file size increases greatly.

When you have your images ready, log on to your photobucket account. There you will see a page with a box in the middle that is labeled "Add Picture" with a button beside it labeled "Browse". The Browse button allows you to look on your computer for the image you wish to upload to photobucket. When you find it select it with the mouse and click the "Open" button. Then, on the photobucket page, check the "keep my picture names" box if you wish. Click the "Submit" button. This will upload your picture to your image gallery on photobucket.

The picture will appear as a thumbnail and below the thumbnail is a link to the picture. Click in the link to place the cursor there and press CTRL and "A" at the same time to highlight the link. Then right click with the mouse and select "copy".

Now you can create a new post in this forum and insert the link by right clicking and selecting "Paste".

That's it. If you wish to create a link to the entire gallery then copy the link to photobucket (your gallery) in the web browser address bar and paste it into the posting.

As an example here is a link to my gallery: http://www.photobucket.com/albums/0903/viking/
---------------------------------------------

I'm adding a small part here on how to post links to images "manually".

The BBS uses a modification of HTML called UBB code, or in this case Vb code. The tag is used for images and looks like this:

[img]http://someplace.com/somefolder/image.jpg

In this example you of course replace the URL with the one that points to where your image is stored. Also, in this example I have used the [noparse] directive to prevent the interpretation of the [img] tag.

It is important that the entire command string have no spaces.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here is another useful item for preparing pictures for display on the forum.

Go here and download and install the free image resizer Powertoy for XP (only).

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...powertoys.mspx (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx)

After it is installed you can right click on any image file in Windows Explorer (or My Computer) and it will have a "Resize image" item on the menu. You can resize 1 or as many as you wish in one go. It generates perfect size pics for posting here using the "Small" selection. It doesn't touch the original but makes a new copy in the same folder using the same name with "small" or "medium" etc appended to it. You can even resize pics when you are adding them to e-mails as attachments if you forgot to do it earlier.

Quoted by Paul Alciatore:
One additional note to add to Evan's excellent instructions:
There are three links or addresses below each picture on Photobucket: URL, Tag and IMG. The URL can be copied and pasted into a post but it will need to be clicked to allow a new browser window to open and show the picture.

The picture will appear in the post if the IMG is copied and pasted into the post and the reader will not need to click and wait.

An additional note: Please be sure to resize the picture with your photo editing software to a width of about 700 pixels. This prevents people from having to scroll across the page to read the posts.

Mel,

Yes it works. Now if you would read my note about resizing the picture to fit on the screen in the second post to this thread you can reduce the size of that image and re post it to Photobucket.

Large images that do not fit on the screen will cause all the messages in a thread to be displayed in the same wide format. This forces every reader to scroll the screen back and forth to read each line. PITA! Big Time PITA!

You can use Microsoft Paint, which is on all Windows computers, to resize the image. In the menus, IMAGE | ATTRIBUTES will tell you the present size of the image in pixels. But don't change the size there. Use IMAGE | STRETCH/SKEW and enter a percentage that will reduce it to 700 pixels wide or less. This will allow it to fit on almost all computer screens.

What this thread is missing is friendly picture size and file size for out friends on dial up.

I think you should make pictures 640 X 480 and 75kb - 80kb.

this file is olny 68kb , it's 5" aluminum being faced at 1,300 RPM to make a hydraulic cylinder head.

A noticeable loss from Tattoomike68's image and Evans redo of the same.
Many times I like to be able to inspect machining images (and boob photos) very closely.
Often I learn much from such.

May I suggest, try to include a link to a larger image when the occasion permits.

Tom M.

Evan
04-18-2006, 02:39 PM
The only difference in the image I redid is that the background is slightly blurred out. There is no change in the detail level of the subject except a bit in the mass of chips above and to the right of the work. By selectively blurring parts of the image that contain no useful information the file size can be reduced dramatically. Keep in mind that I wasn't able to work with the original so there is some generational loss because it is a copy of a copy.

I sat it on the glass at an angle with a sheet of paper over it and the lid down to hold it in place. That's all. The scanner I have has extraordinarily good depth of field. They aren't all this good.

The server clock has been adjusted. However this time it seems that it has caused a serious corruption of the BBS that cannot be easily recovered. Not only are topics out of order but so are postings to topics and it doesn't seem possible to repair or recover the posting order. This is a fatal flaw for this BBS software and if not corrected will make this BBS totally unusable when it happens.:(

topct
05-31-2006, 06:54 PM

Peter

Evan
05-31-2006, 09:08 PM
Based on the clock error that previously existed the clock should catch up sometime tomorrow morning.

When they fixed the date this screwed everything and it won't recover until the proper date and time is later than the previous wrong date and time. It is also corrupting the order of the posts in a thread. I consider this to be a fatal flaw in this BBS software.

It shouldn't allow a post to be made with a date that is earlier than the most recent previous post. That is just plain stupid. If you allow that you corrupt the database. The fact that the system allowed an improperly advanced date to be used without alerting the admin is the root cause and shouldn't have happened. It should have noticed the discrepancy between the last used posting date and the new "using" date and flagged it for inquiry.

I don't know exactly what you are talking about but I with you on getting out of the 20th century.
When this board was "Upgraded" It was so much of an improvement, But it can be even Better With a full time Moderator and Administrator.

God, Did I just say that?

Thank you Evan for the info on posting a picture, work the first time for me and first time posting a picture. Grew up in South Central BC in fact flew into Williams about this time last year to visit family in 100 mile. Quite the ride coming in over the ridge in a dash 8! But decided to move to the promised land about 25 yrs ago.. :D
Cheers, Bob
