Best way to remove light rust off precison ways?

Many of the old machine tools I have owned or worked on have had some slight surface rust on the slides and ways. Is there a way to remove it without using abrasive products that would ruin the flaking and frosting?
Any ideas or products would be much apreciated.

Well I tried what somone sugested. The Scoch Brite pad and kerosene worked really well and did not scratch in any visable way nor did it remove any significant amount of metal. I then oiled it immediatly to stop any futher rust!!
