If I am turning some 4130 chromoly tubing in my lathe, what material would be the "best" for a mandrel in order to support it?
I first thought to use a brass round and turn it slightly down to fit tightly inside the tubing, then use the exposed ends of the brass to hold the entire assembly in my head and tail stock. Next, I thought that perhaps some 1018 or 12L14 leadloy might be better. They are definitely cheaper!
Any thoughts on a good material to use as a tubing mandrel which is cost effective and also easy to machine for a beginner?
Thanks!
