Years ago when Home Shop Machinist first came out there was a portable hardness tester that you could build for a modest fee. I think It had some sort of ball in a tube arangement. I have looked thru my old magazines and can't seem to locate it. Anybody have any ideas?
Thanks,

Fowler makes a set of hardness testing files that are not too expensive. A good hardness tester is lots of $$$.

Try this: Go to the Articles index on this site and enter Hardness Tester in the search engine. You'll get the page number, author, and issue reference for the item you've asked about. Now all you'll need is a pile of old mags.
