View Full Version : Manual Cold Saws vs. Band Saws

I'm looking at purchasing a saw for small to medium steel structurals (e.g. 3" square tubing). I'm debating between a manual cold saw and a manual mitering band saw. Can anyone share with me the draw backs and/or benefits of each?

All of my cold saw experience has been with heavy Aluminum and Copper. Structural was on a 18" Swiss machine - 120 tooth TCB carbide blade zipped through like it was cutting wood. Electrical grade bussbar was cut with an 8" 60 tooth ATB HSS hollow ground blade. Better cuts, faster and much cleaner than a bandsaw. Both units ran with no coolant and never needed repairs.
As far as structural steel, go to a machinery dealer and get a demo - see if it really is what you want. If you do not do that much cutting an abrasive chop saw is worth looking at.
I like the idea of a cold cut saw for the bar stock I use, but are too expensive for now. Maybe I will make what I need later.
Good luck hunting, I hope this helped some.

J,if you're the only one in the shop that will use it,the cold saw will work great! If everybody gets a crack at it,someone will slap a chunk of hard steel in there and it's good bye saw teeth! I bought one made in Poland, when I was working and it was a well made machine, just slightly difficult to set up for different cuts.It was around $2300 about 10yrs.ago.12in blade,I ended up getting a carbide tipped 100tooth blade for it. We had a horizontal and a vertical bandsaw also. The horizontal got the biggest workout, you could start it and forget it. The cold saw,ya had to pull down on the handle.I imagine it hasn't been used since I retired.

I am fortunate and have two cold saws and one horizontal bandsaw. The cold saw cuts much more square and leaves a great finish. The miter cuts off of the cold saw are going to fit tighter. The bandsaw will feed itself and if it is good quality will give good square cuts. If you are cutting alot or welding I would opt for the band it will do fine.
