I have a small Atlas lathe with a 6" swing and want to get a milling attachment to fit it. Palmgren 150 is no longer made. Is there anything else I can do.

Some time ago I owned an Atlas 6 in. lathe and also needed the vertical mill attachment. The Clausing Corp catalog. # for this was M6-500.
I purchased one used from Sobel, N.J. who advertisd in H.S.M. It only needed cleaning and adjusting. Try to find one with the vise.

The Brownell's catalog has listings for two milling attachments, one larger than the other. They seem generic. I don't know a thing about the things, but you could call and ask at 641.623.4000. They're in Iowa and deal in gunsmith tools, supplies, and parts.

I have seen milling att. for your lathe on
Ebay. Look under "Atlas". It seems there is
one on there every 2 or 3 weeks.

"Projects in Metal" no longer exists. The same publication is now called "Machinist's Workshop."

docn8as was so right when he said "u do not want a milling attach that mounts on compound !!!get one that takes the place of compound & mounts on x/lide boss..trust me .....i can take a .030 cut on steel w/ mine when set up RIGHT ....."
I have a 10 inch atlas, wanted a light mill. mounted a tool holder and dial indicator and pushed it around. Near heartfailure at the readings.
Bought cuple of "angle plates" from ENCO and some 2" shafting. Cut the shafting to duplicate the center shaft on the rotating cross feed, bolted the shaft to the angle plate and cut a hole for the compound to fit its old shaft into, drilled and tapped the angle plate to lock the compound in place. I used tee nuts into the compound tool slot to hold mounting plate for my work. The compound gives me Z axis movement, the cross feed gives Y axis, and the carraige feed gives me X axis movement. The working part can be rotated around the Tee nut. Dirt cheap, and rigid. I do worry about breaking something cause it is so stiff. it wont bend before it breaks.

I have the larger Palmgren, and agree the compound is not the place to be mounting one. I tried it, and it is too loose, floppy, and provides quite a bit of leverage against the compound/cross slide junction. Mike

I have an Atlas six inch milling attachment that mounts on the cross slide replacing the compound slide. I also have the morse taper tool holder and drawbar for 1/2 an 3/8 inch tools using a sleeve for the 3/8" tool. I have recently purchased a Taig milling machine and don't need the Atlas device anymore. Contact me via e-mail and we can make an arrangement if you stil need the tool.
