    reversable chuck jaws

How do I know if my chuck jaws are reversable?

Look at the thread on the bottom of the jaw, if it is a crescent shape, it is not reversable. If it is football shaped it is.

They won't work if they aren't. In general, the chucks I have work this way: 4 jaw independent chucks have reversable jaws that can be put either way into the chuck body. 3 jaw universal scroll type chucks don't have reversable jaws, ie one jaw that can be put in both ways, they come with two sets of jaws.

Some three jaw scroll chucks have reversable jaws. These have the double oval type thread. It looks like closed parenthesis, so they will work either way.
The easiest way to find out if they are reversable is to see if they reverse. they will have two sets of numbers on them also.

a lot of newer chucks come with top mounted jaws, keyed on the botton that you can remove and replace on its mating part retained in the chuck body. Reversibls, and replacable.

The top jaws are called "American Standard Pattern Tongue & Groove" that are used on the Bison's and other manual chucks.
