Yep -- sure do, back in the day before the Internet roamed the earth ... In fact, I still have friends from those days. http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//smile.gif People seemed more respectful (in general, this board is a real exception) because there was a really good chance that at some time you'd actually meet the person you were chatting with. The only people allowed to have a really bad attitude toward others were the SysOps.
The thing I'm most surprised about is how the internet grew out of Darpanet... Darpanet was a real pain to use, and always seemed to go down at the worst possible times.

How could this be? Something the internet evolved from?
I thought Al Gore invented it...

I ran a BBS for about three years in my late teens (1990 - 1993). I remember being so proud to have the fastest modem in town! (14.4bps!!!). Interesting precursor to the internet forums. Forums have evolved considerably. Good and bad I suppose.

It is when I'M posting!
I wrote my own BBS software and ran a BBS in 1982 on a 1200 baud modem.

Back then that was hot stuff. I remember signing on to Compuserve at 300 baud and wondering if it was worth it to pay double for 1200 baud service and the extra cost of the modem.
Then things started to improve, fast. Up to 56,000 baud and then a plateau. I guess that's about as good as a standard phone line will do.
