£2,500 start price, cast scrap is £70 a ton at present so 20 x 70 = £1400, add £500 to £800 for shipping to the scrap yard and you are in for a profit of minus £1,600 to minus £1,900

Makes sense to me

In certain areas of the US, notably Pennsylvania, big lathes are a dime a dozen - I went with a friend to look at this behemoth(4 foot swing, 30 feet between centers) up near Scranton for a customer of his. The lathe was originally Navy Department contract, casting said 1943

Asking price? $5000. While there I watched a guy taking a pass on a 56 ton roller. He said it took an entire shift to make one pass.
