On my 10F Atlas lathe when the bull gear is ingaged it will make approx one (1) rev. and start to back out by itself. What kind of adjustment do I need to keep the gear from backing out? John

did you ever take off the back gear, maybe lose the shims that were often there? Can't guarantee all had them, but if the lever won't "cam over" far enough, it might cause it to disengage.

The lever that engages the back gears to the bull gear should lay against its stop and leave just a little slack between the gears. If the lever is not against the stop, the gears will disengage. I lay a paper between the gears to insure the slack is there, then loosen the screw through the collar thatthe lever is mounted in and lay the lever against its stop and tighten.

The shaft the backgears rotate on are on an eccentric and the eccentric must go "over center" to makethe gears lock into place.

Let us know if this helps. I understand the operating manual for the lathe is availalble from clausing.

Edit comment: gvasale you and i are saying same thing i think. I saw the post, went out to look, check manual and never saw your post till i had sent. Sorry for the redundant post http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//smile.gif
