As David Hannum said: "There's a sucker born every minute"

(It was not, as is popularly believed, P. T. Barnum that uttered this now famous quote)

If he made it himself he's quite talented though - i like decorating my house for halloween and making a realistic body out of fiberglass or papermache or latex isn't real easy. It took me alot of tries before i had something worthwhile.

I personally like the

"I have drilled a small hole in the back of the head so that it can be hung up on a wall for display. " :D

Oh i just noticed, in all the auctions he says the skin is "authentic, once living fish skin" or something of the like...can you preserve fish skin without it smelling funky? Make fish skin leather??

well I guess if you are drying fish you can use the left overs for something. in the heyday of the sideshow there was a good biz done suppling allsorts of things to the show crowd and to collectors. Brooklyn bouncers were real popular with the shows because when the law came you could take the pickled punk out of the tank and bounce them on the table. Thus proving it wasn't real, it also helped to show the imprint and made in Brooklyn on it. Show you could open back up and collect the quarters. Makes me home sick for the old days, some were good and alot were bad weather/ no money :D
I guy in Calif that used to deal in sideshow items and the banners own the last real two head human pickled punk on the road in the seventies. Most are still out there in private collections. Along with the two headed baby animals and the real shrunken heads. The guy with the most real shrunken heads lives in Toronto.
former human blockhead/ fire breather/ magician

Apparently.

I guess it might depend on what you define as smelling "fishy" though...

the smell goes away with time, other than the sharkskin that is used in them fancy boots and such. I guess that why all the fish mounts were plaster casts and painted in the old days and now blow moulded plastic in a size close to the one you caught?. Somebody I knew that was in to taxidemy said always order it 4 sizes large, 1 size for the shrinkage, 1 size for the lying and 2 sizes for the ego.:D
The original was a monkey top sown to the fish bottom done in Japan by the indications of the fine workmanship extra small stiching. and there are 4 known
Fiji Mermaids to be extant today and one known destroyed in a musuem fire.

Some poor guy's mother-in-law.

You mean lucky guy if she's stuffed and mounted:D

The Q&A section says it's the "#2 item on Wayoutauctions" #1 has got to be interesting:D

If this were real, it would be against eBay policy, IIRC.

What an interesting scam this guy's come up with. I guess eBay really doesn't care about scammers, as long as they collect fees from them.

It's not a scam. He says :

This Mermaid or Sea monster, you be the judge,

He means you be the judge if it is either, not if it is one or the other. He's clear as it is up to you to decide if it is real.

is this photo a hoax? or for real?

As in, is it a real photo? (Evidently).

Or as in, is it a photo of a genuine industrial-sized Jenny Hanniver?

yep they are either pickeled or stuffed if of a size to be stuffed or freeze dried. there is a market for anything on the worlds flea market/internet. Most places have only outlawed the display and owning human body parts. not animals but I sure that is next. A number of people that had shows either a larger flat front or a small tent with mummy or mummified body parts had to bury them in the town they got busted in. Usually they were turned in by the town's undertaker. Drumming up biz. Some of the cops would let them pack up and get out of town if they knew the digger would steal the gold out of a bodies teeth. Because he only wanted to have the item in question.:D
