I am making a shaper tool holder as discused in an earlier post. I am making it out of W-1. I plan on heat treating it in an electric oven. What RC should I treat to. I can not find any info as to what RC is good for what aplication. Harness verses Britelness. Thanks Bob

The toolpost that came with my Atlas appears to be mild steel (based on a file scratch test). The tool holders that I've made are mild steel as well and appear to work fine. I'm not sure it's worth the trouble to harden them.

Leave it un-hardened----helps absorb the shock loads especially on rough work.

I made it out of W-1. Is that considered mild steel?

I believe that W-1 is considered tool steel. In the un-hardened state it is a bit tougher than mild steel as you probably could tell from working it.

W-1 is high content Carbon drill rod and is tough enough for this purpose in its un-hardened state.
