Are R8 hex collets available ?

It's pretty unusual, the R8 series is considered a toolholder and not a workholding collet. Hex is uncommon in tools but common in work. Looking at the Hardinge site they have R8 hex in a couple of sizes - 7/16 and 5/8, both listed at $73 a pop. One of their regular round collets would be half that price. They'll do a custom, you can write them for a quote but you'll want to be sitting down when you read it.

I can say I have heard of or seen one. I have seen tool and die makers take a stock collet and burn a custom shape in it with an EDM. so you can definatly get one but will have to have it made.

Grizzly has some inexpensive R8 emergency collets, if you're feeling creative. . .
