I've not been machining much of late.
The wife decided I occupied FAR too much of the basement and commandeered some of my machining space, pushing me over further into the woodworking area which then in turn needed rearranging.

Well, what the hell, I've been wanting to make a downdraft sanding table for some time now anyway so....
(It's crucially important to note here that I know nothing at all about designing a downdraft sanding table.)

Undeterred, I decided a 2'x4'x3" plenum with rows of .75" holes was pleasing to the eye and my 2hp Grizzly 1500CFM dust collector connected to the bottom would surely be strong enough to suck spiders off the ceiling above my obviously cunning contraption so...... ahead I forged, true of spirit and pure of heart.

132 holes later, connect the 6" lead pipe and let's fire this baby UP!!
OH, HELL YEAH!!

Gentlepeople, the resulting cacophony of air ripping through those 132 holes is the most amazing caliope, one that may actually be played by sliding small pieces of stock to block various combinations of holes!

The dog is STILL wailing some 30 minutes later! :)

Allright now that you have got our attention, a WAV file is in order.

I third the motion :)

Good story BTW

By chance did you try to measure the vacuum in the box? I'd love to hear this monster as well.

If i did the math right, you are sucking air through the holes at 42 MPH

LMAO

I had the same thing happen when designing the tuie iron for my forge. A bunch of 3/8" holes evenly spaced with a vacuum cleaner motor blowing through them and it produces the most horrifying two-tone squeal... ugh

I stuck a piece of accordian shapped sheet metal down the pipe to break up the air flow so it can't resonate and make the awful noises at full blast.

Next time someone throws away a flex gooseneck lamp, grab it and take it apart, then blow through the flex tube bit and vary the pressure. It makes the craziest chromatic pitch changes, and every one I've tried does it.

Does this mean you now have an organic sanding table? A bit of an audiological peccadillo, no? So now we know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall, yes? :D

Yeah, a "direct tracker" sanding table right out of Audsley's!

And sorry, no WAV files. I can barely get this thing lit off reliably let alone conduct the required manipulations for such accomplishments.

Also much to my chagrin I just discovered a web page with the necessary computations and incantations to construct a sanding table. One which specifically addresses the dust collector I have.

I fear I also fell victim to enthusiastic marketing specifications regarding CFM's and such available to me from this system but, armed as I am now with correct numbers, I shall persevere.

Once more into the breach!

Hmm. Try tacking some egg cartons to one inside wall. Or, maybe some 1/4" square screen just under the holes. Will catch some of the buttons etc. Might break up the air flow just enough.
