View Full Version : Barrel Sw. Woes

Mornin All!!
When I aquired my lathe a few mo's. ago, the motor was missing. The previous owner had an old single phase on it at one time, but it was gone when I got it.

I had several 3ph. mtrs around, so I put one on the old girl(1922 W/S #4 Turret Lathe), and made a RPC out of another.
Well anyway, to get to the point,,Sometime during it's life, somebody has put a Allen-Bradley barrel switch on the old girl.

Theres a paper tag, inside the cover, but theres not enough of the tag left to read the schematic part of it. All I can read is "Bulletin 350-B_A and size#1.

I've got the old girl spinnin the right direction, but I can't, for the life of me, figger out how to Reverse her http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//confused.gif??(still spins forward if I through the lever in reverse)

Theres 12 Screw lugs in the switch, and several jumpers. I've spent hours with my ohm-meter trying to find the correct lugs to hook the Line-in, and Line-out wires http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//frown.gif.

Can someone send me a schematic or a pic of one? I've searched the "Allen Bradley" web site, but came up empty handed. Any help would be GREATLY Appreciated!!

A Million Thanks To All!!

Briefly, what you want the switch to do is swap any two of the 3 wires. But maybe you already know that.....

Roger that SGW. I'm just not smart enough to figger out which six screw lugs on the switch will accomplish that task. The previous owner had all the jumpers removed so's it would work with his single phase motor, and my brain is MAXed out tryin to figger it out.
Thanks for the come-back though!!

Been there myself. I found a local electric motor repair shop and when they found what I was about, one of the guys there stopped at my place and fixed it. Total cost not much.

I believe this will help you with your problem-it's from Allen-Bradley's website. (Note-in my experience these are usually referred to as "DRUM SWITCHES" maybe that's why you couldn't find it.) Hope this helps. http://domino.automation.rockwell.com/Applications/kb/kb.nsf/3a4d062d36d46a47852568f4005a59f4/cb4d3ea612f1ec738525692600474892/$FILE/350-1.0.pdf

Thats a darn good idea!! Might just have to do that. Looks like TREE is getting me squared around though http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//smile.gif

You da Man!! http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//biggrin.gif Back to AB web site I go..
That's exactally the "DRUM" http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//smile.gif switch I've got, unfortunatly that link you provided me with only shows wireing diagrams for the interlocks. My switch doesn't have one http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//frown.gif, BUT you've shown me that it's on the web, and now I can go searching for the main wireing diagram. Thank-You so Very much for the link. I know it wasn't easy to find http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//eek.gif
Take care my friend!!

Thats what I'm looking for. Thanks a zillion!! I just spent the last hour searching the AB site, and I couldn't even find what YOU sent me. Kinda dense i guess http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net//frown.gif.

Can I trouble you for one more favor? The 2nd link you sent me only shows the drum switch having 8 lugs. Mine is a size#1 with 12 lugs. Do you think they have a wiring diagram on the Bulletin350 size 1 switch with 12 screw lugs? I hate to keep askin favors, but I simply can-not seem to find what you'r findin.
Thanks again TREE

Tink; I have not been able to find what you're looking for but I am not through with my search yet. Don't give up hope. Check back here tomorrow-maybe I'll have something for you. Tree
