I just replaced the V-belts on my lathe with "Power Twist Plus" from Fenner Drives. These belts are made of segments of polyester/polyurethane that hook together. They run very smooth and don't slip under heavy load. Best of all I didn't have to pull the spindle out of the lathe. Here is the web site for anyone interested, http://www.fennerdrives.com

Typically these belts are made to work in a single direction. How do they work when you run in reverse? Can they take a heavy load?

My chuck is threaded on to the spindle, I can't say how they run in reverse. As to taking a heavy load, I have been unable to make them slip. I did manage to dim the lights though.
