I used to volunteer at the Assistive Technology department of Easter Seals. We developed lots of designs to help people. The trick is that we only supplied plans. The designs were simple enough that users could read the plans and make their own devices. In this way they assumed full responsibility. In fact, this is what we do at HSM and MW. If you are concerned about being sued, then just participate in the brain storming.

Now, that is not to say that anyone can sue anyone else for anything. The most dangerous thing I do is drive my car.
